Our company has made a butterfly valve with a nominal size of DN 3500. It is the greatest butterfly valve in the history of our production. The butterfly valve has been installed into a pipeline having a length of 140 metres and a diameter of 3.8 metres in a new 100 MW hydraulic power plant, located at Rendalen, Norway. It has been built close to the existing power plant which has been running since 1971. In fully open position, the butterfly valve has a flow rate of 60 m3/s, which is really a very high number. There is no dam with a valve of similar parameters in the Czech Republic. Also the calculated values of the valve weight break any record: the total weight of the butterfly valve with lever and counterweight makes 35 tonnes!
Due to the above mentioned parameters of the butterfly valve, it was necessary to perform a series of calculations by means of the Simulation Works program. Mr. Jiří Halfar, the Calculation Engineer, says in this connection: “We had to submit calculations exactly according to the requirements of the customer who put great stress especially on the low flow resistance coefficient. In order to achieve the required values, we designed the butterfly valve disc and substantiated it with calculations.”
The order required to make many calculations, such as flow calculations, strength and stress analyses, or calculations of hydrodynamic moments acting on the valve, just to name a few of them.
